After almost a year since our launch, and with more than 50 unique extensions for distribution on CMS Market, we decided to revisit our current commission to create an even better program for our authors. The result of this investigation led us to update the author commission for any products sold through CMS Market to 80%. While we notified our authors of the change in early September, it's time to let the rest of the world know. Of course, listing your extension which is hosted on your own site will always remain free - we currently have almost 500 products listed through CMS Market in this manner.
Why The Change?
Back in September 2008 when we were conceptualizing CMS Market, we mainly wanted to target smaller developers to come and list their extensions for distribution (whether for free or a price). We were developers who worked on many different sites and created tons of small modules and plugins and didn't know what to do with them when we were done. It's always best to give back to the community, but support, setting up a site for distribution, and general promotion take time. This all led us to CMS Market, allowing these one-off extensions (usually for clients) to find a home, with the ease of just an upload and a description.
In a perfect world, we'd go to 100%, but we do, of course, have administration costs, server expenses, and support costs for setting up the forums, dealing with customer issues, and the occassional refund. Hopefully this move will spur even more involvement from the community and even more great GPL extensions for your favorite CMS's will continue being listed.
