SIMGallery
Product Description:
SIMGallery is the only (yes, ONLY) Joomla gallery system that was developed specifically with communities in mind, and is integrated seamlessly with Community Builder or JomSocial.
Tired of all the galleries extensions out there that provide tons of features that 90% of users don't need? Looking for a component that allows your users to upload and share their own photos, but every "solution" you found requires hacking, modifying, or compromises certain functionality? I know I am, which was why I created SIMGallery.
You do not need to hack / modify / slash / set it on fire in order to have a community-driven gallery. If you have a community site and is looking for a way to allow your users to manage their photos, SIMGallery is not only your best choice, it is your only choice! SIMGallery looks and works EXACTLY like Facebook's photos, with even BETTER features!

Ordinarily, I would not be so harsh on the shortcomings of an extension, but when you plop down $120 USD, I expect damn near perfection. First I will take or give a blow to myself for not reading more about this extension before I paid for it, so really this is my fault. So I will simply try to explain what I see as shortcomings of this commercial product. * It is touted as a "community solution". Communities come together around different themes and objectives. There is no functionality here which allows users to share images around a common interest - no categorization so for instance you can see a gallery for BMW lovers and their cars, one for Mercedes, Audi, and so on. There are only galleries(rather albums) for individuals. So if you have Jom Social like we do, the gain or benefit here over what is already included is what??! * Upgrading --- May be the most disappointing component that I've seen when it comes to upgrading. Not only are ALL files replaced and over written, but you have to replace all of the menu items related to the component as well. * This is advertised as a JomSocial complement, but the JS links don't all work out of the box. * File Hacking -- on the developers site, you will see a long list of files which have to be hacked to get this thing to work properly if you have Mootools 1.1: http://www.simbunch.com/forum/index.php?f=41&rb_v=viewforum * Ease of Navigation - There are 1-2 too many steps to publish your photos after uploading them. Action items are not clearly called out, there is just this box with a plus sign in it, not clear to average users - as our members have told us. If Phoca or Ignite ever come out with versions which are compatible with JomSocial, I see no competitive advantage for SimBunch. |
